Fighting Sickness

Fighting sickness is always tough. It’s especially tough when you’re a warrior. You know… The type of person who is constantly kicking ass and taking names? Yeah, that type of person. I am all too familiar with it myself. People like us tend to want to bulldoze our way through sickness. We have the “sweat it out” mentality.

While having unstoppable drive is an admirable trait, and i’m certainly glad to have it. It can really hurt us when it comes to fighting sickness. Now I know you don’t want to hear this. Hell I don’t even want to, but it’s a reality that we must accept. That reality is that we must go hard on recovering just like we go hard in everything else in life, and that doesn’t mean trying to hustle through it.

It means dropping that ego and taking strategic steps to get back in the fight faster.

Fighting Sickness

Go hard or go home is a common motto amongst our people, but today I want to challenge you to think of going hard a little differently when it comes to fighting sickness. Life’s all about perspective and as Warriors we must also challenge ourselves to see the world a little differently, and not always in the same way. This might cause a little discomfort to embrace, but it’s vital that we do it.

Remember, it’s only in the uncomfort zone that we grow into better people.

The following tips i’m about to drop apply to virtually every kind of sickness out there, and some might seem stupidly obvious but hear me out, and stick around at the bottom for an infographic breakdown.


STEP 1 – Sleep

The last thing that’s on my mind, ever. I hate sleeping because my mind never stops. The longer I sit still the more I think about how much work I could be getting done, or how many goals I could be crushing, etc. However, sleep is obviously vital. Not only for proper brain function, but for recovery. You see, our body goes hard on healing itself when it’s broken down all the time, but it goes into overdrive when we sleep.

So when it comes to fighting sickness. Sleeping more will help you fight it faster. Not more work, training, or sweat. Rest is critical to the recovery process.

STEP 2 – Hydration

Drink more water… Seriously. Being sick obviously makes us feel abnormal. It might sound stupid, but you need to drink more water when you’re sick even though you might not feel like you need it. When we are fighting sickness we commonly have a lot of diarrhea combined with a lot of sweating, especially at night.

If you have those symptoms you will want to ensure you stay hydrated because sickness will dehydrate the hell outta you. I like to drink my recovery BCAA’s when i’m fighting sickness as well.

STEP 3 – Stretching

Often overlooked when we’re not sick, and completely overlooked when we are. Stretching is a good way to relieve body aches, and help the body recover faster. It’s also instrumental in injury prevention. Check out these injury prevention exercises I did a video on awhile back. Flexibility work, if done properly, has a calming effect. It can really aid you in relaxing which will lead to faster recovery.

Try it before you hit the bed. I stretch at least twice a day, everyday. Oddly enough I kick higher, have better balance, and more energy than almost everyone I train with at the gym. I’m not saying it’s due to stretching, but I know it helps.

Fighting SicknessSTEP 4 – When you think you’re better, wait

One of the biggest mistakes I made for a lot of my life was getting back in the gym to train too soon after a sickness. I thought I was better, and I felt good enough to train, but afterwards I always felt worse than I did before. By training too soon it put me back out of the fight for a few more days longer than it would have if I’d have had a little more patience.

I often fought through it anyway and just trained sick. Looking back I now know this was a terrible decision every time. It’s much better for results, and for your health if you simply wait a couple extra days longer than you feel you should before training again. Otherwise you’ll do more damage than good.

As much as we like to drive on, “sweating it out” doesn’t necessarily work too well if you have a real sickness.

STEP 5 – Getting to the cause, not the symptoms

My good friend and personal Chiropractor Dr Tim Dunne of Spine & Sports Chiropractic tells me this all the time. He works on Olympic athletes, and Professional Bodybuilders, and has more years fixing health problems than I’ve been alive. When it comes to my health I consult experts on the subject, and I like to achieve health naturally. Not through vaccines and medication.

I regularly visit my Chiro at least 2 times a week to not only aid me in fighting sickness and diseases, but because it makes me feel phenomenal for training. It also helps to keep me focused on work by alleviating pain that would normally cause distractions.

Priority 1 – Remove The Roadblocks

Remove the interference in the nervous system allowing the communication between the brain and tissues to be 100% clear and unimpeded.

The Immune System is responsible to ward off disease. It is controlled and regulated by the Nervous System, specifically the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which is in the brain stem (which travels thru the first cervical bone in the neck).

Priority 2 – Enhancing The Nutrition

70% of your immune system is directed or influenced the the function of your GI tract or Gut. Now think of our “American Lifestyle” of high sugars, highly processed and genetically modified foods. What do you think is the effect of these foods on the GI tract?

Toxins, dysfunction, and over time dis-ease.

The answer is in a plant based nutritional program, high in vegetables, allowing for 10% of your caloric consumption to come from animal proteins as long as they are from a clean, grass fed, non steroidal/hormonal origin to include beef, chicken, and fish. Minimizing grains and some fruits based on the glycemic index of sugar content. Adding a daily Probiotic to establish a healthy gut flora is optimal.

Getting to the causes of sickness vs putting a bandaid over the symptoms will most certainly help you in fighting sickness faster to get you back in the game. For me this starts with keeping my brain stem in check with regular Chiro visits.

STEP 6 – Focus Redirect

The last thing us Warriors want to deal with is a sickness taking us outta the fight, but we can’t and shouldn’t just fight through it. This means you need something productive to redirect your focus to.
