The good ole Fresnel Lens. It’s a pretty common lens to have. The Fresnel Lens is incredibly small, carries no weight, and can fit just about anywhere. I keep my Fresnel Lens in my Core Nano Adventure Wallet. However, you might throw one in your pack or vehicle too. It’s a great fun way to make fire, and serves as a great alternative/backup and minimalist fire starting solution too.
Starting fire with the Fresnel Lens can be tricky the first couple attempts, but after you do it once, every time after is relatively easy. All you need is a really clear sunny day, and the Fresnel Lens itself. In my video here you’ll also notice that I like to use a stick to get better control over the lens to make the task a little easier. This helps you by allowing you to have less motion in the lens so you can maintain the focal point where it needs to be.
Tinder is another critical piece to a successful fire by sun magnification. You want to have a really dry birds nest. Something with a good amount of fibrous characteristics will help. You can also use paper for this as well. I like to stay with the natural method myself.
There’s also all kinds of other lens types you can use. You can even use a bottle of water, a plastic bag with your own pee, and even a chunk of ice. This is just one simple method of fire by sun that I like to use.
